As Syp has said, nice to see Cryptic trying to simplify its voluminous future history on the lead up to Star Trek Online.
But, Cryptic should be cautious as to what message it's projecting about the Star Trek universe, and the game itself.
When I think of Star Trek, certainly phasers and photon torpedoes feature prominently. But so, too, does exploring the far reaches of space, coming across bizarre stellar anomalies, confronting strange new life forms, and solving seemingly intractable mysteries.
If STO is just Starfleet Command IV with added stand-and-face phaser combat until someone falls down or explodes, I don't know if it's the game for me.
Makes me wonder who Cryptic is targetting the game at. There are surely more than enough Trek enthusiasts who don Vulcan ears alone to keep your average MMO knee deep in latinum. So why are they letting STO become assimilated into the ranks of other purely combat-based MMOs? Maybe because they don't know better. After all City of Heroes (which I love, BTW) was basically a spandex-based combat game. No detective work or problem solving going on there.
